Listening with understanding and empathy
Child: Nusayba
Date: September 2014
Written by: T. Natasha
This afternoon Kamila and Musa came down to the under two classroom with us. Kamila initiated a game involving the popup tent which you eagerly joined in, adding to the dramatic play direction. Kamila was very direct with her ideas that only to people could fit inside the ship and all the balls were popcorn and needed to be flung out of the ship/tent. You could see Musa had finished eating and wanted to be part of your game. You suggested things between both Kamila and Musa until it was decided Musa was a pirate and was collecting the popcorn to provide the girls with.
Nusayba you are a very caring friend, listening with understanding and empathy to both of your friends needs and wants, ensuring they were both happy and able to play with you. Taking responsibility for your friends happiness is very kind.
Where to next?
You are a caring friend and older sister Nusayba, being aware of etiquette and manners of your culture and New Zealand. To continue building on your naturally sensitive disposition we will encourage your dramatic play to explore more sophisticated moral issues, social strategies and more advanced etiquette to challenge you such as tea parties, burglar/cop/victim/family.Tuesday, August 5, 2014

Big Sister!
We were all very proud of Nusayba when asked how her new baby brother is or mother doing she responds "Alhamdo lillah"
Nusayba it sounds like you are enjoying being a big sister, proudly informing your friends of this when asked to play different roles during dramatic play. Your best friend Kamila enjoys sharing this special role with you as she also is a big sister and cannot wait to one day met your baby brother and often enjoys showing you how she helps her baby brother in the afternoons when we join the under two classrooms. You are also delighted to see Granddad you is helping out at the moment when he comes to collect you - you always greet him with the biggest smile and run to him for a cuddle.
What learning is happening here?
A change in family dynamics is often a big transition for children and can be unsettling as they adjust to new roles within the family. Therefore it is very positive to see Nusayba viewing herself as a big sister with pride thanks to her mother's preparing during the pregnancy period. Nusayba is enjoying having some stability and familiarity in her life through regular routines at school and having the same role within the classroom context. At the moment Nusayba is enjoying having extended family members around to spend time with and is very proud of her Grandfather.
What to next?
We will carefully observe Nusayba's behavior as she continues to settle and adapt to having a new born in the home, especially after extended family leave. We will continue offering Nusayba many ways to express herself and ideas such as art and dramatic play.

"Look at my tummy!"
Nusayba I could not stop laughing this afternoon when you came to me to show me your tummy! You looked pregnant - just like Mum! I asked you "what happened to your tummy?", to which you giggled while rubbing your tummy, your eyes alive with excitement. I then asked if I could feel your tummy, at which you proudly pushed it out even further! I rubbed your tummy and then put my ear towards it to listen for a baby but... OH NO! There was no heart beat! You quickly gasped and repeated "Oh, no!" Before jumping up and down, this dislodged the ball you had hidden in your top giving the illusion you were pregnant. You giggled and giggled. Saleh seeing all the excitement decided to copy you, you both took turns pretending to be pregnant before revealing the ball. I asked if I could take photos to show your Mum, thank you Nusayba for letting me share this with your mother. Saleh really enjoyed his time with you today Nusayba, following you to the books and reading with you after you were tired out from all the jumping.
Review of learning
I enjoyed watching you find humor while responding with wonderment and awe. You clearly are very playful, trusting, confident, and have courage. These are all positive learning dispositions or habits of the mind you have developed over the last year. You are also testing out roles, such as the new role of your mother now she is pregnant in a safe and playful manner, imitating the way she bends and rubs her tummy sometimes. Sharing in fun has also strengthened the friendship Saleh feels towards you, expanding your social circle.
Where to next?
Nusayba I enjoy watching you grow and develop your personality and love of learning/life. I want to continue encouraging you to be creative and innovative while strengthening friendships through dramatic play. Dramatic play is an important part of play and involves many of the same skills needed for literacy while providing safe way to test out roles. I will continue to provide a range of materials and allow you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Enjoy the term break Nusayba! April 2014
Before the term break your mother told me how you were all going to Auckland for an extended weekend, how exciting! What kind of things did you see in Auckland Nusayba? I hope you enjoy the term break and know we may see you for one or two days. Your friend Kamila will be attending and I am sure she will be excited to see you when you return.
When term two starts we will be having a party for your friend Aliya who will be joining us in the over two classroom now. Aliya's mother is very happy she already has a friend in her new classroom, thank you for being friendly Nusayba!
While you have been away we have started practicing wadu and performing Dhuhr prayer as a class after lunch. As we approach Ramadan we are excited to expand your knowledge of your Islamic faith. Our focus for term two is our bodies - check out the main blog page or in the classroom for more info =)
